endeavours. Chembra peak is the highest peak in Wayanad
at 2100m. above mean sea level. It is14 kms. west of

of the flowing spring which sprouts from the top of
the hill accompanies the tourist. If he is fortunate

| Chithirapuram
: |
 10
kms from munnar, with its sleepy little cottages bungalows,
old playgrounds and courts, chithirapuram still exudes
an old world charm. Home of the pallyvasal hydel power
project, this hill town is also famous for its picturesque
tea plantation.
India Travel Destinations, the site, provides a nature
and wild life seeker with a golden opportunity to explore
the natural delights offered, by undertaking a tour
to Chithirapuram, which is a less discovered Hill Station
in India.
Kerala is closer to public conscience as a land of sleepy
backwaters and sunlit horizons with boats fading out
in the distance to quarters accessible only to the famed
Boatmen. Apart from this picture postcard beauty of
Kerala, a tour to Chithirapuram reveals its agricultural
importance to the more interested souls. The Spices
Board of Kerala has under its ambit two major nurseries,
with one being at Chithirapuram, which enjoys a deeper
identity as a Hill station in India.
A tour to Chithirapuram reveals the Hill Station to
be a sleepy little folksy, congregation of nature's
delights. This hill Station in India is home to the
Pallyvasal Hydel Project and added to this meager qualification
as a center of natural beauty, it has a liberal smattering
of tea plantations, which a tour to Chithirapuram would
reveal.
Looking to escape from your daily schedules and launch
yourself onto a rejuvenating vacation? In that case,
Kerala Tours offers its Chithirapuram hill tours that
are a perfect way to wash away all your fatigue. Just
10 km away from Munnar, this sleepy little hill town
is a paradisiacal retreat that offers you the best of
nature and beauty. In fact, there is such an enchanting
old worldly charm about Chithirapuram that no one remains
immune to its magic.
Chithirapuram has partly remained undiscovered over
the years as tourists make a beeline for the more famous
hill stations in Kerala. But on the other hand, this
has come as a real blessing as it allows you to revel
in the unspoiled beauty of the place without huge crowds
diverting you. Nowhere else will you be able to indulge
in such a deep and soulful communion with nature.
As you luxuriate in your beautiful surroundings during
your Chithirapuram hill tour, indulge in a number of
recreational and adventure activities that are sure
to keep you agreeably occupied. Go for mountain hikes,
nature walks and treks that would draw you closer to
this wonderful hill retreat..
It must also be mentioned that Chithirapuram is the
site for the Pallyvasal Hydel Project. A trip to the
site can add up to a nice outing during your Chithirapuram
hill tour. You can also drive down to the Mathupetty
Reservoir where you can indulge in some speedboat racing.

| Ponmudi
: |
 A
mere one and a half hour's road journey separates the
beaches of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) from the
invigorating climate of Ponmudi Hills. The name Ponmudi,
a hill station so close to the sea, in Malayalam means
golden crown. On the way to Ponmudi, the thick tropical
forest greets one at the foot of the Ponmudi hill range.
The road passes under a canopy of thickly matted foliage.
The forest recedes gradually giving way to neatly clipped
tea bushes.
The salubrious hill station of Ponmudi is at a distance
of 61 kms from Thiruvananthapuram. The enchanting bounty
of nature can be witnessed here in the quiet surroundings.
Perched at an altitude of over 100 m above sea level
on the Western Ghats, the shimmering green waters of
the winding streams and verdant woods of Ponmudi do
not spare anybody. Trekking is a passion with the visitors
to Ponmudi, lying within easy driving distance from
Thiruvananthapuram.
One will find oneself compulsively pausing every now
and then to drink in deep the spectacular sweep of the
hill ranges, tea-estates and the mist-covered valleys,
peppered with little toy-like stone cottages painted
a pretty violet, pink, or white with pointed and peaked
roofs. Ponmudi (meaning Golden Crown) is hill resort
situated just 54km from Thiruvananthapuram, is an enchanting
one for tourists. It is just one and a half hour's road
journey from Trivandrum. The main attractions at Ponmudi
are Orchids and Deer Park which is only 3 kilometers
away from the Ponmudi resort.
As one leaves the city behind, one enters the region
of plantations - rubber, pepper, cardamom and tea. The
change is abrupt. The tappers can be seen going about
briskly gathering the milky fluid from rubber trees
collected in coconut shells. Coconut thatch mats cover
almost one half of the road, over which women spread
black pepper for drying. One may come across a lone
elephant ambling along carrying his mahout atop and
his breakfast of coconut thatch in his trunk.
Tea estates at Ponmudi are not as big as those in the
Munnar hills. Large water sprays shower the gardens.
The 'mate', a septuagenarian shading himself with an
umbrella, can be seen reading aloud the day's news to
the pickers. The pickers, in response, either grunt
indicating disapproval of the news item or remain silent
in agreement.
Trekking to the north of Ponmudi Crest, one passes along
a mini zoo, primarily of barasinghas, on the edge of
the forest. Entering the forest, the verdant shades
of green numb the senses. As does the avian orchestra.
The brilliant red southern trongon dot the trees like
flowers. The air is full with the loud raucous chuckling
of heavy billed Malabar hornbills. The shrill notes
of the blue-black Malabar whistling thrush add to the
cacophony. Even the rare long-tailed paradise flycatchers
flit gracefully from tree to tree. It is like an open
aviary. |
